WHAT IS IT
Berberine comes from China and India, where it was first used in traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine.

It is a natural alkaloid found in a wide variety of traditional herbs.

Within these plants, the berberine alkaloid can be found in the plant's stem, bark, roots and rhizomes (root-like underground stems).

WHY USE IT
A number of studies have been conducted on the benefits of Berberine, and findings of these studies have shown definite or probable benefits for several health problems, including:
  • Aging
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gastrointestinal infections
  • Heart disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Immune challenges
  • Joint problems
  • Low bone density
  • Weight control

HOW
You can buy Berberine as a supplement. The standard dose is 900-2000 mg per day, divided into three to four doses.

Berberine should be taken with a meal, or shortly after, to take advantage of the effect on blood sugar and the increase in lipids associated with eating.

Too much berberine at once can lead to stomach problems, cramps and diarrhea.
