WHAT IS IT
5-HTP is a compound that is converted to serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is one of the most important neurotransmitters associated with happiness and antidepressants.

5-HTP has been used successfully to restore serotonin levels in those who may suffer from decreased serotonin levels, such as the depressed and those with high levels of body inflammation (usually seen in metabolic syndrome).

WHY USE IT
Studies show that 5-HTP has a positive effect on the following:
  • Reduces appetite
  • Weight loss (most likely because your appetite goes down)
  • Better sleep
  • Reduced depression
HOW TO USE IT
A typical dose of 5-HTP is in the range 300-500 mg, taken either once daily or in divided doses. Lower doses may also be effective, although they are usually associated with other drugs.

To reduce food intake, 5-HTP should be taken with a meal as it increases satiety from food intake.

IMPORTANT:
5-HTP should not be taken with any neurological medication that has been prescribed for antidepressants or other cognitive purposes unless directed by a physician. This is most important for SSRI (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) use, where the combination with 5-HTP is potentially fatal.
